A German family business committed to natural wool and textile crafts since 1977.
The Alpen wool sourced for our Needle Felting Kits and including in our Complete Mending Kits comes from the Swiss black-nosed sheep which live almost exclusively in the Valais high Alps. They are ideally suited to the climate. In early summer they climb the serpentine path to Belalp and graze in the over 2,100 m high area around the Aletsch Glacier. There they have a natural run during the summer and enjoy fresh mountain air in a completely natural flora. Black-nosed sheep, with their dark faces and corkscrew-like twisted horns, are not only "cute" and beautiful to look at, but also, because they live high up in the mountains, provide a very special, well crimped wool. Children especially like her because she felts quickly. The alpine wool holds together well, even when applied very thinly, and is therefore very popular with felting professionals for transparent work.
At the end of August, the more than 1,000 sheep from summer graze to "Schafscheid". Driven on the Belalp and collected in Steinmauer Schaf Pferchen.
The various owners then sort them into smaller pens according to their markings, so that they can descend in groups to the pastures in the valley a little later. After the drive, the sheep are sheared according to old tradition.
After shearing, the high-quality alpine wool is brought to a small Swiss family business, where it is only washed chemical-free with soda. Water from the nearby mountain stream is used. The washing process is so natural and environmentally friendly that the wastewater can flow straight back into the stream.
It is dyed carefully and color-fast, without pre-pickling or chemical additives. Only acid colors and natural vinegar are used. Even drying takes place whenever the weather permits, in the fresh air, on warm tin roofs, largely without energy consumption. In winter, the waste heat from the dyeing process is used to heat the building. Finally, the alpine wool is combed onto fleece. The carding machines are constantly maintained and cleaned with Swiss care. Wherever dust and small plant particles accumulate, vacuum cleaners are installed to ensure that they cannot get back into the wool. All around our Alps wool is worked with a lot of effort, expertise and care in this nice Swiss family business.
