The Cost of Cloth Nappies vs Disposable Nappies - A Modern Dilemma

Disposable Nappies are still relatively new but in our ever depleting world, do we need to go back to cloth and ditch the plastic? Here is the low down on why we believe the Disana nappy system is the best for bub, the planet and the purse.

Personally we have tried over 20 different washable nappies with varying satisfaction, Disana's nappy system is my favourite, not least because there are no plastics involved at all. Disposable nappies are enormously problematic for the environment and they are super expensive. But because you buy them gradually over the course of the first 2-3 years of your child's life you don't notice the cost to your pocket and the garbage goes into landfill and out of sight. If you were to add up the costs and pile up all those garbage bags you'll realise you would save mountains of cash and landfill emissions by choosing cloth. But not just any cloth, choosing organically certified natural fibres means the animals, soil and farmer has been cared for and at the garments end-of-life those fibres will be good for, not detrimental to the planet.

Did you know that Wool can do the job of the plastic waterproof membrane that comes will most Modern Cloth Nappies? Merino wool is highly absorbent, has temperature regulating and moisture wicking and odour neutralising properties that make it the perfect fibre for dealing with poo and wee. Disana's wool nappy cover is the most effective that we've tried.

Compostable or Biodegradable disposable nappies aren't really a thing. They won't compost in a landfill, just release emissions and finding a commercial compost that will take nappies plus the logistics of getting them there is hugely problematic. Whereas organic natural fibres like cotton and merino wool will compost at end of life in your garden after they have had their day as cleaning cloths and actually contribute to soil health.

The outlay required to furnish your nappy changing table with all the washable nappies required for your baby's nappying can add up. However of all the nappy systems on the market the Disana nappy system is one of the most economical, ethical and ecological that we have found.

Using cloth is such a worthwhile commitment and has made our nappy changing times more playful and is a beautiful bonding experience. My advice to avoid falling into the convenience trap of disposables is - just don't buy any!  Please feel free to contact us at info@woollykins.com.au if you have any queries at all about the Disana nappy system or using cloth nappies for your babies because we have used them for years and believe we know all the tips and tricks to avoid pitfalls in your nappy journey.

If you're worried about the initial cost, why not enlist your loved ones to help with the initial outlay required? Create a Wishlist to start planning for your special new arrival that you can share with your people and avoid receiving unneeded, albeit well intentioned, gifts!
