How to dress your child for the Snow

Skiiing with kids, mountain climbing or hiking the hills? Whatever family adventure you have planned be sure you’re well dressed with Woollykins!

    Warmth comes from layering

The best material for a child’s under layers is organic merino wool. As children barely sweat, artificial high tech fibres that wick are not suitable for children. Woollen underwear keeps an even temperature and humidity which is important for our health and wellbeing. Our 100% organic merino underwear is warm and soft and the merino/silk blend thermals are especially suitable for children with sensitive and allergic skin. With GOTS certification, you can be sure that your child is wearing toxin-free fibres against their precious skin – our largest, most responsive organ.

Read on for our layering tips or shop our SNOW EDIT for all our favourite natural Ski essentials that won’t cost the planet.

Dressing for the snow in all natural fibres

It’s healthy outdoors and we all want our children to love the great outdoors as much as we do. Properly dressed your child will feel comfortable to enjoy the slopes all day long.

Read on for our top tips on how to dress appropriately for the snow with advice from our Scandinavian brands that know snow….

Several thin layers breathe and perform better than one thick layer. Each garment in layered clothing has its own purpose. The air between each layer of clothing insulates heat and gives protection. Layered clothing is important especially in the colder and wetter seasons. However choosing natural wool fibres is the key to comfortable and high performing layered clothing.

Forget high-tech fibres, sheep have evolved to withstand the most harsh climatic conditions. There is no modern fibre that can beat the natural performance of merino wool worn directly next to the skin.

Look at this very sweet Snow pixie in head to toe Woollykins. With thanks to the lovely @bunkymin for sending through these delightful photos of her son in the snowy hills of Tassie wearing the Disana Boiled Wool Dungareesand Mittens, the As We Grow Mountain Cardigan and the Kleineschobbejak Boiled Wool Pixie Vest.

Breathable merino wool keeps skin warm, dry and non-sweaty

The best material for a child’s under layers is organic merino wool. As children don’t sweat much at all, artificial fibres that wick moisture are not suitable for children. Woollen underwear keeps an even temperature and humidity on the child’s skin. Our 100% merino underwear is lovely and soft and our merino/silk blend thermals are especially suitable for children with sensitive and allergic skin. With GOTS certification you can be sure that your child is wearing the most natural, pesticide, pure natural fibres against their precious skin - our largest, most responsive organ!

    Layering for Warmth

BASE LAYERS - First a sleeveless wool singlet (essential) followed by a wool/silk or 100% merino wool long-sleeve base layer and leggings.

JUMPER - The Disana organic Knitted Kids Jumper is the perfect layering jumper and is available in sizes up to 10 years.

OUTER VEST/CARDI - Then layer a wool/alpaca outer vest or an alpaca cardigan

JACKET - Boiled wool makes wonderful snow jacket combined with a good rain coat and pants like the Fairechild Rain Gear. These items come in handy off the slopes too which is an important consideration when investing in Snow Gear which is often very expensive and gets very limited use.

SKI PANTS The Disana Boiled Wool Dungarees plus a pair of Rain Pants make wonderful ski pants that aren't limited to use in the snow only.

ACCESSORIES - The head, ears and neck can be protected with a woollen balaclava that absorbs moisture and stays warm even when damp. A fine wool/silk balaclava with a Boiled Wool Hat over the top gives the best protection from cold winds and wet snow. Woollen mittens and 100% wool socks help keep kids warm and feeling dry even if ski boots leak.

The great thing about layered clothing is that layers can be added or reduced easily as the temperature can greatly fluctuate on the slopes and in an out of heated ski lodges. With merino wool, those under layers will ensure that those temperature changes are managed without fuss and your child will be happy to take to the slopes all day long!

Dress for the snow in natural fibres

Lastly but importantly, consider the impacts of your Snow Clothing. Natural fibres are always best for any investment clothing like this. They are more versatile, they don't off-gas and pollute the planet or your body and can return to the soil at the end of a long life.

We pride ourselves on selecting all your most natural merino wool clothing out there, designed especially for outdoorsy kids with play, safety and a love of the planet all taken care of so you can relax and enjoy your Winter family adventures now and so can future generations.
