  • Engel Natur Packaging Information

German brand Engel Natur has been concerned with creating low impact textiles since the beginning and their fine knitted thermals and garments require being stored in protective packaging to maintain the integrity of the embodied energy and natural resources used to create their garments.

In order to avoid wasting those precious resources the articles needs to be protected from dirt, moisture and pests such as moths. Therefore you will find that Engel's high quality organic merino and silk clothing comes packaged in a zip lock Recycled plastic bag.

After much research into the most sustainable solution to package their high-quality products they have ultimately chosen to use recycled polyethylene (RE PE for short).  This material has many advantages, the protection of the article is ensured, you can see the article clearly which avoids unnecessary exposure in the retail setting and no new resources are used for the production of the bags, only post-consumer waste, i.e. waste generated by private and commercial end users in households and offices. PE bags can be recycled  several times. Recycled poly bags should no longer be used to store food.

The recycled material is certified with the Blue Angel. Less water is used in production than in the production of cardboard and paper, for example. If disposed of correctly, the bags can be incinerated without leaving any residue.

The supplier for the new recycling PE bags is based in Germany; also the recycling of the polybags takes place in Germany and the waste required for this does not have to travel long distances to the recycling plant - therefore the transport does not unnecessarily increase CO2 emissions. The company is currently building a circulatory system for used polybags, which Engel will join in due course. So all in all an acceptable solution that combines expediency with the conservation of resources.
